When installing the rigid track for the rub rail how do you turn the corner at the stern? Is heat and bending involed? Or should I just miter it enough to make the corner? Or should I just completely cut the rubrail at the corner joint and attach the 2 pieces separately and combine them when inserting the black rubber middle section?

Thanks

Mark

No idea on what's the best way to go but there's a tutorial on how to do it somewhere on the forum. Try to search the topic and you should find it.

Good luck.

Mark,

I think you could cut the top and bottom part out in a 45° angle so when you fold the end part around the stern you make a 90° angle with both ends touching. I'm not sure if you need to cut it all the way through though. Maybe when the top and bottom part are cut the middle part will fold easily.

Here are a couple of pictures showing what I mean:

The rigid plastic receiver track cannot be bent around 90-degree corners. A 90-degree joint it made by cutting each side at a 45-degree angle. The vinyl insert is usually bent and fitted to the 90-degree corner so that the vinyl insert is maintained as one continuous piece around the boat.

I think you can see the technique in the digital images linked above.

Jim's challenge got me. Went out to the boat (10 feet from the back door) and snapped a few.

Note - this rubrail is on a 1991 Outrage 17 and could be original. I think I need to buff it out.

I want to thank everyone for their input on the 90 degree corner of the receiver track. That rigid material is tough to work with. And like I have seen others mention you finally really figure out the system when you are almost done. Either multiple helpers are needed or 1 helper and lots of clamps. I found soune of those quick grip clamps, and a lot of spring clamps did the trick.

Thanks again,
Mark

According to Chuck Bennett, "These were basically cut (with a hacksaw by eye) and ground down (with a 4" grinder) to fit. We matched the two angles by grinding them with the 4" grinder until that were as close as possible.
Sand with 100 grit to smooth the ends and attach the transom pcs."
