I have a mid 1980's Mercury 90 on my 17' whaler. The lower unit has begun making a pretty loud clacking noise when in gear and under load. In neutral it does not make the noise regardless of rpm and in gear if is not noticable at low rpms. When the motor is off and in neutral the prop spins freely, but when I put it in forward and try to spin the prop counter clockwise I get resistence from the motor, when I spin clockwise I get a fairly loud clicking noise and the prop spins without resistence from the motor. With the engine off and in reverse I get resistence from the motor both directions I spin the prop.

My thought is that it is something to do with either the shaft coming down the lower unit or possible the gears/cogs inside the lower unit.

Any suggestions on the best way to attack this problem.

Thanks
Greg
