I just got my Mill Covers (RPS & Console) they look great. Anyone have tips for installing the little screw in snaps? I though I remembered a trick for drilling into gelcoat, run the bit in reverse this way the gel coat does not crack??? I guess a dab of 5200 to lock it in?

Thanks

Run the bit in reverse just to get through the gelcoat, then go into forward..

Make sure you flare the edge of the hole (oversized bit) so you don't get a stress crack in the future. Simple marine sealant will work.

I put the first couple of snaps in without regard to the gel coat, big mistake. The threads displaced the gel coat and chipped it out. What worked for me was to first use a countersink bit to go through the gel coat and then drill the hole for the thread. The counter sink bit is easily controlled to get the diameter you want and will not "walk" on the gel coat.

You don't need 3M 5200, just a good marine grade silicone.

Thanks guys. What size of bit did you guys you use? Say the screw is 1/8th inch, did you drill a 1/16 hole?
