It's a 1976 engine with the MagFlash style of electronic ignition. The gearcase has an internal oil pump for assisted hydraulic shifting. The motor should have black colored coils for each cylinder, and if any are cracked, they shoudl be replaced to avoid future power pack problems.

Because the motor has the first generation of magneto CD ignition, a large capacity battery is needed to crank the motor over fast enough for quick starts. A $49.95 marine battery won't cut it. The battery also acts as the voltage regulator so get an extra heavy duty, 800MCA or better battery and make sure the cables and starter are in good shape.

Today's alcohol laced fuels may affect the rubber hoses, pump, and carb gaskets, so plan on replacing those items in the near future. Replace the water pump also and check the thermostat for proper warmup.
