[Solicits] thoughts on synthetic vs traditional dinosaur juice for two-cycle motors? Does synthetic oil burn any cleaner? Is synthetic oil less likely to foul plugs? |

Not sure on the synthetic oil, however, I know you need the additive TCW3. Could contact the oil company that produces the synthetic oil you want to use and talk to one of the engineers. I would do this first before trying to save the environment vs. seizing my engine...good luck |

TCW-3 or TCW-III is not an additive. TCW-3 is a rating. Most modern two-cycle motors require an oil which meets TCW-3 specifications. The general claims made for most synthetic oils used in two-cycle motors is a cleaner burn with less smoke. |

I can tell you from personal experience that synthetic oils burn cleaner with less fouling. I've been using Amsoil in all my 2 cycle stuff both on and off the water for years. |

Be carefull running certain syns in a conventional 2 smoke. Iknow Optimax oil says right on the jug not to do so. I am positive you can run XD50 in one but not sure about XD100 either. |

Use Amsoil. The snowmobile guys that rebuild their engines all the time and swear by the product. We used synthetic oil at work because it paid or itself with efficiency savings. It is the best oil based on inepependent tests and first hand experience. It is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy. |

I use Pennzoil full synthetic - http://www.pennzoil.com/products/marine/index.html#FullSynthetic You can get it at West Marine for $29.99, if you shop around you can find it cheaper. |

A few years ago I made I test of Pennzoil FULL synthetic oil vs the regular Merc Premium oil (non-synthetic) in my identical condition twin Merc 115HP "towers". In the photo, the port engine was running off the main tank, pre-mixed 50-1 with the Merc oil. The starboard engine was running off a 12 gallon external tank mixed 50-1 with the costly Pennzoil full synthetic. The results were amazingly different, and I was quite surprised to see how smokey the synthetic was. Obviously, I never switched over to it, as the Merc 115's clearly don't like it. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v429/lgoltz/Outrage%2018/?action=view& current=Scan0002.jpg . |

Larry that is good info. Did you run them at speed at all? Reason I ask is maybe the synthetic was blowing out some old crud because it does that in 4 strokes. Not quite the same but syn oil will clean out an engine and start to find leaks. I tried Mobil 1 in my Hardley and the thing started dripping on the floor. Replaced it with Dino and it stopped. Slippery and has a good cleaning agent. |

Nick - I run Merc "QuickClean" in these engines every 3rd tank, so they should have been pretty clean to begin with. The photo was taken after we had been out on the Lake running 3000-4000, but whenever I slowed them down to idle speeds, the smoke came back. |

Coincidentally I switched to Penzoil full synthetic this year because I expected to have less smoke and odor. After a couple of gallons I don't see a big difference one way of the other. I'll probably go back to Merc Premium after I use up the synthetic and use the savings to keep the gas tank full. |

LHG: THANK YOU for a well-controlled experiment. I'll stick with the Castrol dino for now.
