Thanks for all of your comments.

I like my Rage 15, and I'm hoping I can tweak this wonderful hull into a keeper.

Can someone tell me if there is a common performance/fuel consumption problem with the stock 115 hp two cycle v-4?

Even more frustrating, my boat is sluggish to come out of the water, will not plane with more than three people on board, and DRINKS gas when the throttle is anywhere near 75%. I simply can't run above 4600rpm for that reason. The motor was recently rebuilt, nice job with pistons, rings and bearings. I hate to scrap such a great rebuild--but am considering the conversion to outboard if I can't make this tub run economically. I'm estimating 3 mpg at 75% throttle. It smells a bit rich, but I'm afraid to re-jet the carbs without some careful coaching on that issue.

Any comments are welcome--

I have the Yamaha rage, but have you checked the clearance on the impeller in the drive? If it is worn, you would lose performance.

Thanks Martino--no signs of wear that I recall, but will look again. Anyone else have similar experience out there?

Would love to see this jet fly, but it just isn't happening!

What's your top speed? If I remember right, mine was 30+ mph with no worse than 5 gph.

Not a great performer from the factory and why they later dropped in a 175hp.

Thanks guys--

I'm thinking tops is 30 mph AT 4500 rpm...not much better at 5,000. I read about these 90 hp conversions of the Rage that will hit 45 mph and will come on plan in 3 seconds!

That's more like it, and you should have plenty of speed at 50% throttle which should be approx 4 gph or approx 8 mpg.

Lots of work for the conversion, but this is an extremely nice boat worth keeping...and I'm only into the boat for $5k, so the math is pretty easy.

Other comments on this lack of oomph?

I believe the 115 tops out somewhere between 33-36 mph. That would be under ideal conditions and a light load. It should definitely get on a plane, at probably around 22mph or so.

If your motor is getting it's full RPM's up, and you don't think it's putting out enough power/speed, then it's time to look at the jet pump. If it's not reaching it's top rated RPM's, then look at the powerhead. If there's something stuck in the jet impeller (such as even a small piece of wood), performance will seriously suffer. Been there, done that.

As you get used to running the boat, listen to the motor at all it's different speeds and conditions. You'll soon be able to tell just by sound if it's healthy, if the motor is missing, or if the jet is clogged.

I have the Rage 175 and at top speed, it gobbles 14+ GPH. In ideal conditions, can do 55mph, but I can't afford to do that anymore... I stay at 30 or so most of the time.

You have a great boat there. Keep us informed as you go of your findings.
