My recently serviced 2007 Yamaha F115 four-cycle outboard skips and misses after trolling for a while. The engine cranks and runs well when cold, but has almost stranded me more than once after trolling. The problem has gotten worse lately and it is hard to start and keep running after idling for any amount of time. Any advice as to what my problem is will be appreciated.

Matt--I have the same model, manufactured in 2003, with only 130 hours and know a bit about the engine. While I can guess a filter, VST or injector [is the source of the malfunction], please detail for us what service was performed exactly and by whom. What are the total hours on the engine to date and any service work done in the last 12 months.

Detail your fuel source, marina or gas station. Do you use gasoling-ethanol blended fuel? Do you treat your fuel with a stabilizer or other treatment? Under deck or portable tank (plastic, aluminum or fiberglass)?

Thanks

It sounds like a component is being affected by heat. Do you have a temperature gauge on the engine?

Had that problem until I replaced my old(er) battery - my F150 would crank forever before starting if it was hot. I bought a new marine battery from WalMart and installed it two weeks ago.

I now have no problem starting the engine after an hour of idling while trolling with the kicker.

My engine has 60 hrs. on it and has had scheduled oil changes. Recently I had plugs and fuel filter replaced. I use gas station fuel with no additives and lug 5 gallon cans up and down the pier. A couple of months ago my son opened the fuel lid on the boat while swimming around it on my buoy and I found it the next morning. The lid is on the side of the hull. I didn't think that any water entered the tank. The problem didn't start until about a month after the incident.

Do you have a water separator installed?

Are the 60 hrs from this year or from part of last year.

Did you store your boat's fuel tank with anything over the winter?

I would rule out the battery first.

To me, there is a starting issue and a running issue.

For the running rough issue:

I would look at the high pressure fuel filter and change it (should be a 1-2 year maintenance item).

I would also clean and inspect the vapor separator tank (VST). On the F115 model only, the VST is mounted to the backside of the intake manifold (port side). This requires you to remove the intake (with the fuel rail, injectors etc still attached). On all the other engines it is mounted off the block and easily accessed. The VST should be inspected/cleaned every 2 years.

If you still have an issue, would get your injectors sent out for cleaning and flow testing.

I got almost stranded this past April. The symptom was rough idle, bogged down and would barely run that occurred without warning. Cost $550 for new filters/VST diaphram, injector servicing and labor.

Hope this helps.

Change that 10 Micron filter, 10 - 1 that filter is full/clogged.

The filter is also a potential source for air leaking into the fuel system-either via the threads or through pin holes that develop in the filter canister when it rusts. I have had a filter that was fine at first, and then after a few months time it loosened up just enough to cause an air leak that stopped the motor. Re-tightening by hand curred that.

Check for this problem by pumping the priming bulb-does it hold the pressure as it should?

First of all thank you all for your help. I'll try to answer questions as best I can, for I am a beginner with boat motors. My mechanic claims he replaced plugs and fuel filter. I don't know if high pressure fuel filter is the same thing or a seperate part. I don't trust him anymore because when I described my problem to him and told him when my symptoms occured, he couldn't remember what I told him to do to make them happen. My engine has 60 hrs over 2 summer seasons on a freshwater lake. I have dumped my water seperator and it appears to be all fuel. I have never put any additives in the fuel tank prior to storage. It only acts up after trolling for a while. It cranks and idles fine when I drop it off the boatlift. I do have a suspicion that water might have gotten into the fuel tank. My boat is a 196 Hurricane fundeck with that 115 Yammy 4stroke. New plugs, oil change, and fuel filter is all that I know to tell you. If the problem is water in the fuel tank is there an additive made to keep from having to drain the tank? The dealer I bought the boat from is about 2 hrs. away and I would have to borrow a trailer from a friend that has the same model. My dealer is very reputable and the largest dealer in NC. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to trailer it there, but I don't trust any of my local mechanics and it's hard to be there when he "checks it". More suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I hate to miss Labor Day at Lake Waccamaw, NC.

Matt-

Suggest you drain the fuel tank, run fresh gas with some treatment like Seafoam. Don't shock it (on directions), just treat the gas.

Run the engine a while.

Suggest you get a service manual so you can learn the parts of the engine. Here is a photo showing where the two filters are.

Note - While the regular fuel filter can be removed (unscrewed), do NOT remove the high pressure filter without releasing the pressure in the fuel rail.

If the Seafoam doesn't help, think it needs to be serviced by a real mechanic.
