I would like to buy a "Steersman" grease fitting for my 2004 Mercury 90 hp 4 stroke (carbed). This is a Yamaha powerhead.
(It's on a 2004 Montauk 170, if that matters).

The web site gives a choice of 7/8" or 1" diameter. Does anyone know which size is correct for the above engine?

Steersman gives a way to look it up on their web site, referencing Mercury Parts Express. You'll need your serial number. That said, my 08 built 90 Merc required a 1" nut, which I would think yours does as well.
