I bought a [Boston Whaler GUARDIAN 22 boat at] auction and am trying to title it. The only [Hull Identification] numbers I can find are inside the rope locker. Stenciled in black is "A22765". A metal tag inside the anchor locker on the bow of the boat reads "BWC5 459 I 788." The "I" might not really be an "I" as i is hard to tell. There is no tag whatsoever on the transom. Which [number] do I use to title the boat? |

The metal tag on the transom should read the same as the one in the rope locker. Use the HIN from the metal tags. |

You use the HIN (probably: BWC5A459I788). The metal tag in the bow locker is a redundant HIN tag which the Feds required as a secondary identification location. To help thwart theft, a "hidden" HIN location was required. There would have been an identical metal tag pop-riveted to the transom near the top edge, starboard side. The four 1/8" holes may still be there. The HIN and stenciled number tell us you have a 22 footer built in September of 1987 as a 1988 model. |

I think a thorough reading of the Frequently Asked Questions would have given the answer. See: Q2: Where is the Hull Identification Number? |
