I recently purchased a used lower unit for my 1991 Yamaha 130. Are there any tricks to [replacement of the gear case]? Is it as simple as taking the old one off and putting the new one on? Thank You - Will

Will,I have changed the water pump impellers on both my 200 HP (1989) Yamahas and my 70 HP (1992) Yamaha. To drop the lower unit, you removed six bolts and then caught the sucker when you gave it a tap. To me, that is the same effort that would be required to REPLACE the lower unit. Invest in a Chilton's -- worth its weight in gold. --- WhalerAce |

In theory it is easy, If the parts want to come apart is another story, You should have three or two bolts on each side of the engine and two in the rear, one under the small fin on the rear of the lower unit, Check the shift rod think its a spline that year so should slide right out, replace your water pump, lower unit oil, and grease the bolts when you replace them on the lower unit, Can be done by yourself but it nice to have some help to drop the lower unit and replace...good luck |
