I have a 40hp johnson outboard. The serial # is J 2,740,251.
I know it is a RK series but I do not know anything else about it. Any information would be very helpful in finding parts and what ratio to use.
thanks
Troy

The model # is missing. I know it is a RK series because it is electric. The guy I got it from had a book with the seriel #s for each year but it did not go up to the year for this outboard.
thanks

Let's try to narrow it down.

An offwhite (called French Silver) colored motor is a '62 through '66. Medium green motors came out in '67 and changed to dark green for '68 and later.

If the motor is offwhite, look at the carburetor. See if it has a water heated choke or a hot-air heated choke on it.

No matter what year you can use 50:1 in it as long as it's TC-W3 oil. Those motors had all roller and needle bearings in them which makes it OK.

The gear oil has to be the special Premium Blend available from any dealer.

the lower half is dark green. If I pick up a manual for late sixties to early seventies motor should I be fine. I need to find out how to replace a lower unit bearing and I also need to find out what each of the wires is for.
thanks again
Troy
