I [wish] to remove the oil-fuel mixing from my 1993 Mercury 200-HP motor. I have a couple of questions, and sorry if they are a bit basic, but I'm not an engineer. The plastic gear on the crankshaft seems to have stripped. I am assuming this as there are a few plastic shavings on the shaft although the warning horn doesn't go off and the pump doesn't have any output. If I remove the oil mixing system will any bits of plastic remaining do any damage to the engine? I have just replaced the warning horn as this had failed. I believe that the engine may have run without oil on idle twice only for around eight minutes. How much damage have I done to the engine? It appears to run fine. The engine was not used for a couple of years.
How can I check that all is OK with the engine? Any help appreciated.
Paul

Failure of the plastic gear is commonly reported, and as you have decided, due to the extraordinarily high cost of repair and replacement, the usual approach is to abandon the oil-fuel mixing system.

Failure of the alarm system on these engines is also a commonly reported problem, although typically the failure mode causes a constant alarm to sound. Failure of the aural alert sounder on these engine is also commonly reported. You have already remedied that problem.

To assess the engine's current condition, perform a compression check.

Thanks for the replies. Will do a compression check over the weekend but do i need to be concerned about the possibility of small pieces of plastic moving around
