Does anyone know of a good mail order place to have a bow light chrome plated?

James - what does it cost for re-chrome job like you pictured? Thanks, Mav

The place in Seattle that Tom Clark mentioned in the 2nd post has quoted me between $100 and $150. Mine looks like the bow light in the 1st picture above. Sounds like they pay the return UPS cost.

jamesmylesmcp, Nice job. How has it held up? Did the $180.00 include the prep work?

Duval plating in Jacksonville FL was efficient and cost-effective for me. They do a lot of work for the classic Huckins yachts. I left 14 pieces including my bow light and all looked 100% new for ~$250.

Those pieces are Marinium, are they not? Can you plate over that material and does it hold well?
jamesmylesmcp posted 01-21-2009 05:43 AM ET (US)     Profile for jamesmylesmcp  Send Email to jamesmylesmcp
The peices are Brass.

The pieces pictured were made by Perko of bronze.

Aluminum hardware can be chrome plated though it properly involves and additional plating step. Whaler (Wilcox-Crittenden, actually) never chrome plated their Marinium hardware.

Whaler also used chrome plated zinc hardware on some early models (rail fittings most commonly). Chrome pated zinc does not hold up at all and should be discarded in favor of more durable fittings.

Ditto Tom on the zinc being crap. My rail fittings look like something off the Titanic and need to be replaced. I will say that i bought one of the knockoff SS bowchocks off E-Bay for like $175 shipped and it still looks new after 3 years. My old one sits in a box, not sure that I want to replate it. I am thinking of polishing it to look like brass and clear it along with the norman pin and mount it on my 13' when i put a new rubrail on.

Tom, the sampson post is stamped Wilcox-Crittenden and is also Brass. The only Marinium parts on my 1971 Outrage are the stern cleats and they bear a stamp "marinium".

Indeed on the ebay bow chock (Specialty whatever). Three years still looks new. Bigs, have you checked out the SS Norman Pin for $35? zot.

Mav,

I had the bow light re-chromed and later found an original bow chock assembly on ebay which I had re-chromed as well.

I had everything done by Salt Lake Chrome. The total was $88.00 plus a hazardous waste fee.

I think they did a very nice job.

I will say that they don't do much Whaler stuff and so calling them for a quote will be difficult. Their minimum, as of three months ago, was $50.00.

If you want to call them, I can give you my invoice numbers for reference. You should ask for Kevin Williams.
