I have a 1968 Boston Whaler 13-footer that I have been completely redoing. I'm done with the hull and about to build new seats and console. Can I use a new Teleflex or similar steering cable? Or, do I have to use the old pulley system? Does this depend on the hull or the outboard? I have a 1989 Nissan 30-HP outboard. I would greatly appreciate any information. Thanks

Since you are doing a complete redo, you have a great opportunity to get rid of all of the cables and pulleys and go to a slicker-looking system. Your Nissan should hook up to a Teleflex cable without a problem. If your pulley system is in perfect shape and you don’t need to do anything to it, they do work just fine. If the cables need to be replaced and you were thinking of changing the steering wheel anyway, it’s a good time to make the upgrade. Someone with a similar vintage 13’ could probably tell you what length Teleflex cable to buy.
Good luck with the restoration,
Bob L

I am doing the same project. Took the old pulley system out and replacing it with a Teleflex rotary system for around $225. Teleflex makes a couple of different rotary models.s

Thanks, That helps. When I got my hull it was empty except for the bow board, so I'll be rebuilding everything and don't even have a steering system at this time. My outboard is set up for remote steering. It is a 15" Short shaft, so I guess I'll need those brackets. I'm looking for a stainless steel steering wheel. Will any new steering wheel work with a teleflex system or do I need a specific one? Also I'll be widening the consol and placing the steering closer to the center of the hull for weight distribution. Anything special I need to know other than getting a longer cable? Thanks again.

Any of you who have removed your pulley and cable steering system, I would like to buy your pulleys, especially the two that were mounted in the console of the 13 footer. Also need the springs. Actually I will buy the whole setup with the drum included if you have it.
