Anyone have any idea where this is located on a 1998 Johnson 115 Ficht? Dual console boat, does not have the control box type trottle/ignition. Key/kill switch on dash. Throttle is simply the arm mounted on the gunwale next to the driver.

The switch stuck on me today, where ever it is located. I had to jockey the throttle forward, neutral reverse a few times to get it back to where it would start.

Don't know where to start looking to resolve this.

Thanks.

The start-in-neutral protection switch is always part of the throttle/shift engine control unit. There are two yellow/black leads from this switch to the same color leads in the key switch ignition harness.

The shift box is on the other side of the bulkhead. The shift throttle handle has to be attached to it directly. Some are mounted that way.
Have fun, and good luck!

I am a little confused...this handle is the only thing coming through the gunwale...through a 4" round hole. No way to get to any type of box behind it.

I don't think this is a standard OMC throttle...looks more like a teleflex or similar.

But this is definately where the neutral switch is?

If it hangs up again, is there any way to temporarily bypass the switch so I can get the engine started and get home?

Nevermind...I found the parts diagram, and the location of the neutral switch.

Thanks!

Probably just a little corroded. If you need to bypass it just disconnect the wires and connectthem together to complete the ciruit. This should ONLY be a temporary fix as it can be deadly.

Please fill us in on where it turned out to be. I'll bet it
was in the throttle/shift unit on the gunwale.

BTW, you get lots of points for figuring out that it was the
neutral switch. There's a ton of other bugs that would have
the same symptom.

Chuck...it was just luck.

I actually paddled the boat back to the ramp. I figured it was the starter solenoid or the key switch since I didn't hear a "click" when the key was turned to start.

I didn't have anything handy to jump the solenoid with handy.

The "beep" would sound when turned to on, and the tilt/trim worked so I knew it wasn't the battery.

It wasn't until I got home that it dawned on me that maybe the trottle was kicked over into gear...I have a couple of boats with Yamaha's which don't have the "trigger" to put them into gear. When I checked it on this boat it was indeed in neutral. So I went forward/reverse/neutral a few times and viola...it started. Wish I would have thought of that before paddling 1/4 mile.

Also...as far as bypassing...it would only be in an emergency. Can I short these at the key switch since I don't have easy access to behind the throttle lever?

Maybe.
