[This author says that his Mercury 200-HP Black Max won't run at high speed for more than a few minutes in spite of having replaced all the fuel lines, a new primer bulb, and a rebuilt fuel pump. He seeks advice on repairs.]

If the engine speed drops slowly from high-speed operation, your problem is likely fuel related. If the engine speed drops suddenly, the problem is likely electrical in nature.

Check the stator it has a high speed winding and if you cannot remember the last time it was replaced it is probably due.

I had that problem a few years ago with my 1986 Merc Black Max 150. It turned out to be a plugged pick-up tube in the fuel tank under the deck of my 1986 Outrage 18. To make a long story short eventually I replaced the tank.

Test to see if this is the problem by running the engine off a portable tank on deck.
