My old gasket was deformed by someone putting the top on incorrectly and squishing part of it. I also had replaced the foam cowling liner with a noise dampening one. That was a mistake as water got in and part of the liner was felt like stuff. So anyhow, that liner is gone and the motor shop put on this new gasket and it does not look right to me. The old one was stapled to the cowling and this one is not. I can pull it right off. Do I even need a liner? I did not notice any difference between the old foam one and the new, now discarded sound dampening one. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d137/jmartin-/DSCF4130.jpg http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d137/jmartin-/DSCF4131.jpg John |

You don't need a liner but you do need the gasket. |

What my concerns me is that my seal looks so much different, it sticks up, than Jim's seal. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d137/jmartin-/staticTrim600x4501.jpg John |

Did someone take it off and try to fix it? The reason I ask is it looks like it was put back on upside down. May just be the pictures but something similar happened on one of my outboards and it was because the gasket was put on upside down. just a thought. |

It's a new gasket. The old one was deformed in one corner letting water in. The old one was stapled to the cowling. The new one is not. I will check if it goes on the other way tonight. John |

It only goes on one way. The old one was hooked to the cowling and that forced more of the gasket into the groove, I think. Sigh, now there are three things wrong after my motor went to the experts for service. The new gasket was not attached, the new batteries, that they said I needed, were too tall for the boxes and they crammed the tops on and replaced my lock nuts with wing nuts, and they missed the hole in the sifting lever when they put the lower unit back on. That cost me a day of boating. I have been disappointed in every OMC shop in Skagit County. John |
