I was running last week and after switching tanks my 1996 Yamaha 90 two stroke went from full power to 1700 rpms. If I gave it throttle it would just bog. Drained and cleaned the two tanks, replaced the spark plugs and bought a new fuel water separator. Took it out today and it ran up to 35 mph. I reduced speed for an idle zone with 3 minutes of starting and it began to bog again. Would not rev and problem did not go away after letting it sit for hours. The choke does not affect nor does squeezing the fuel bulb while moving. Any ideas. I did a search and think I will do the fuel bulb on Friday. Do I need OEM or are the afermarket ones ok?

Any help would be appreciated.
Tom

Tom,

After much hassle I highly, highly recommend the OEM ones - the new ones can wear out (i.e. the check valve inside stops working) within a matter of weeks. This was an issue I dealt with 3-4 times on my Montauk and probably the biggest operating hassle about the boat until I figured out to use OEM - by which I mean a Tempo. The guys at your local boating store should be able to point you in the right direction - the aftermarket ones are junk.

Buy OEM...does not matter what brand just a good one, Merc, OMC, Yamaha, etc.

In my quest to replace the bulb I bought a new filter for the motor. Of course the fuel filter housing snapped when I took the piece apart. Can I put a quality inline filter inside the cowling and be done with it. Or do I need to buy the $45.00 housing. There is not much to the part. I did buy the OEM bulb.

Thanks
Tom
