Got a 1976 40 HP. Got on the forum the other day and got good advice about Seafoaming the motor. This morning I took out the big screw and drained the carb bowl. Then squeezed the gas tank bulb to flush out the carb. Then was cranking it up to warm motor up to decarbonize and it runs for 15 seconds at fast idle and then dies after which raw gas is coming out of the carb air intake. Big time flooded. Drained the carb again and cranks up again fro 20 seconds and same thing happens again. What do I do?

Thanks again in advance for the help.

Float is stuck...remove carb and clean.

Thanks for the reply.

I've never removed an outboard carb to clean. Is there anything difficult about the procedure? What do you do after you get the thing unbolted? I'm moderately mechanical but is this something that I should get a mechanic to do?

Pretty simple. remove carb, remove bottom bolts holding on the bowl. Inside is the float that has a pin and a spring on it. The seat that pin goes in gets swelled by ethanol or crud and will stick either up or down. You will need to clean it out along with the other jets. If you can get ot off, it might be better to take it to a friend or shop who has some experience with them. If one can clean a motorcycle carb, they can do a boat carb for instance. Having a shop do it if removed should not be more than an hours labor.

Biggie's probably right. But, I had an embarassing incident with a 40 Merc years back. Same symptoms as yours. After hours of putzing, I discovered the choke lever (located in a very inconspicuous position) had accidentally been flipped to full choke. Ran great after that...

Yeah I did that with my 225 on maiden spring voyage. Got it in the water after of course running it on muffs at house, and she was puffing out smoke like a DDT sprayer. I thought I must still have fogging fluid in her but it would not idle, etc. After about 10 minutes of futzing around I pulled the shroud and low and behold that little red valve was in manual choke mode. Flipped it back and she purred like a kitten. That was shortly after I cranked the snot out of it scratching my head until I realized I did not have the lanyard on. WAAAAYYY too much Tequila the night before.

These old 40's have a butterfly so it should be easy to spot that and it would probably not start again for some time. My bet is on the float.
