I am trying to get into the Yamaha control box on my console, so that I can tighten a screw which I believe will hold the throttle lever in place better underway (ie when I adjust the throttle to 4000 rpm's, it stays there). One of the 4 screws that holds the box into the console is stripped. The machine screw phillips head is stripped out and "soft". Does anyone have any advice how to unscrew it?

can you get at it to use "easy outs" they are reverse threaded devices designed to get out stuck screwsif that doesn't work, get ahold of an experience auto mechanic - they have tools to deal with this - it happens to them all the time |

I'm not sure if you mean the screw threads are stripped or the the head where the driver fits ,,sooo if its threads,,Slip a flat feeler gauge under the screw head as you unscrew it ,,use thicker feeler gauges to keep up the pressure as the screw comes up,,If its the head ,, Use a points file and cut a slot across the head to use a standard screw driver |

Sal,I faced the same dillema last spring with my 704 binnacle mount. Two of the cover screws were frozen and I needed to get the cover off to tighten the mounting bracket to the console. I ended up cutting off the head of the screw with a dremel. That got the cover free. Once the threaded shaft and the mounting bracket it was threaded into was exposed, I could apply Kroil or PB Blaster. A few soaks and I used vice grips to get them loose and out. I used the same size screw but added anti-seize.

If the screw head is not recessed into the box you may be able to cut a slot in the head using a dremel or a hacksaw blade and use a bladed screw driver to remove the screw. If the screw is recessed to far you can drill the head off and follow Sal's advice to get at the rest. |
