Going to be installing a simple bilge pump on a mid eighties Montauk this weekend and I know that the bilge pump needs to be screwed down in the sump area. Was curious as to whether I should be worried about what I bed it with; I do not want any water to get into the hull. Life caulk? 3200? Suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Why screw it down? I have a bilge pump just sitting in the sump nudged in there among all the other cables. No holes or bedding necessary and works fine. I can also move it out of the way to clean inside the sump.

Mine is not screwed down; it is wedged under the hatch. I think I would prefer to have one screwed down though, as I am thinking there would not be a perpetual inch of water in the bilge.

I have the Rule 500 simply wedged in the sump among the wires and the sump cover. It doesn't budge. If I can avoid drilling holes in my boat, especially a wet area, the better off the boat is.

Why not just stick it down with some 42/5200? Them if you need to remove it just floss it out?

Ditto on just wedging the pump in. It worked fine for me.

I used 5200,no screws. You can still pop the the pump off for cleaning. I ran the wires direct to the battery and installed a cheap little push-pull switch inline and every thing has worked great. Got caught in a pretty severe rainstorm at Lake Amistad last week and it paid for itself many times over.JLW

Thanks for the insight everyone. I think wedging the pump might be the way to go, but I am worried about whether it would become dislodged after day on the bay consisting of some pounding....
