Sometimes its impossible to repair a non skid deck. On some Whalers with flat areas, you can buy sections of non skid deck in fiberglass sheets, and just epoxy them over the old deck, but you can`t do this in a 13 footer due to the compound curvature of the floor. I had about 30 various screw holes, and many stress cracks. I found the only way was to replace the non skid. What I did was to laminate a layer of 3/4oz glass mat over the old floor with polyester resin. First I filled all the screw holes and sanded the old gel coat, to get a good bond with the mat. Next I laid out the mat and rolled a coat of resin over it, and worked it in through the mat with a ridge roller, being careful to get it all wetted out, all the bubbles busted, and not overwet, When that tacked up, I rolled another coat of resin over the first, same way as the first. Then I took a small cutting wheel and cut the excess cloth off around that little channel that goes around the bottom. After I did this I took my grinder and feathered in the new glass edges to the old deck, so it was seamless. This part is done, and I painted the boat with Awlgrip, and installed the interior.
Even though the deck had a little stipple finish from the resin covered mat, it was really slick due to the Awlgrip finish. Now I taped off the areas of the deck that you could actually walk on, and lightly sanded those areas. Then using a 3" dense foam bull nose roller I rolled a coat ow Awlgrip on those areas. Then with a salt shaker full of non skid material from the Home Center, I salted the areas evenly and lightly. After the paint tacked up in an hour or so, I rolled another coat of Awlgrip over the salted areas. The areas are now none skid, but barely look that way to the eye, because of the gloss. It is easy to clean and slip proof. It ain`t original but neither is the boat, and actually no one has even noticed.

Rich,

Why would you not just shoot or roll in Awlgrip "Griptex".
Here are some images of Dave Mackey's 13 with a new Griptex nonskid.

Or one could go with Durabak which they used on this Mako redo

My deck was in poor condition and needed to be re glassed. I think Mackey reglassed his floor too, I couldn`t imagine spraying Griptex laden Awlgrip over a worn out nonskid patterned floor. Duabak is a roll on bedliner material, I wouldn`t choose to use that. As far as using Awlgrip Griptex. the sprinkle method they suggest is basically what I did, except I used another product at a fraction of the cost of Awlgrip particles, and then recoated with a top coat of Awlgrip rolled on. So now the particles are embedded into the Awlgrip, same as the spray on method. I didn`t use as heavy a coat of particles as Mackey did, so dirt comes off with a hose, no brushing needed, but still non skid. His job stands out because he changed the color, I didn`t so its barely noticable. The Whaler stickers on the deck are not my taste.LOL

(from Awlgrip)
Application Instructions Griptex particles may be added to mixed topcoats and applied by spray. Dry particles may be broadcast or sprinkled into a tacky paint film. Do not apply to surfaces warmer than 105 F or colder than 55 F. Do not attempt to cure below 55 F (13 C).

Binkie, thanks for the tip. I was going to pay more $$ for the Griptex. Did the stuff you bought come in different sized granules (coarse v. fine)? If so which did you use? Were the roller covers you used white? I just purchased some at Home Depot that say they are compatable with urethane and varnishes.

Jeff, I have heard several people say the bedliner is very hard to keep clean so I would not consider it.

according to DTMACKEY's instructions on how he laid his non-skid, he did not spray but sprinkled it on using a improvised salt shaker (peanut can) more or less what Rich did. I'm a week out from laying my non-skid (grip-tex) man am I nervous about the possible outcome. I practiced a few times trying different amounts and I'll just say I hope it is not as complicated as I seem to be making it. I think my problem is that I've been impatiently waiting to flip my boat and get the inside done and that being more or less the last part, really don't want to screw it up.

Don`t be nervous. When I did mine, I sprinkled on more than I should have, so the next day I lightly sanded it with my orbital sander, till it was were I thought it should be, and then rolled another coat of Awlgrip over it, and it came out perfect. If you look at the final picture, It is shinier under the seat, as I only did the surfaces that you would walk on. I think the Home Centers have only one size granule. This whole thing was really one of the simplest things to do on the boat.

These are the roller covers I use for rolling AwlGrip. Available at Home Depot and Lowe's. They are commonly called cigar rollers, with bullnose(rounded) ends and are dense foam. They hold up well in Awlgrip(polyurethane) but fall apart in AwlGrip primer(Epoxy). With the rounded ends they won`t leave roller tracks, and with the dense foam only thin coats can be applied, after a coat has dried tack free, another coat can be applied. The resulting finish looks like a spray job, with no orange peel. I painted the yellow stripe on my bass boat with this method, the rest of the boat I sprayed the AwlGrip.

Here are the rollers;

Those are the rollers I got! I have used them to paint furniture in the past and the finish looks sprayed on.

Binkie, is the tan primer on your non skid Duratec by any chance? What is the red filler you used?

Turpin, I have your project pages bookmarked for when I feel discouraged. Your boat is going to look great.

I think what you are thinking is tan primer is the 3/4 oz. glass mat that is laminated to the bottom. It looks tan bucuase the boat is sitting in a tan screen tent getting ready to be painted. The red filler is automotive spot glazing putty, that fills the small imperfections.

RTM,
Have You ever had any problems with the red bleeding through paint. My Dad has been in the Automotive paint business for 40 years and about freaked out when he say that I had used red spot putty to fill pin holes and such other small imperfections? I have used it before but have NEVER had any problems and when I asked for proof from him I got a long dissertation about questioning an opinion. He did say he has never used it so he had no hands on proof other than 30 years ago with red primer.

Free Bird,
Thanks it's been a test of patience and large learning curves. I wish I could have it to do over again and I definitely would do a few things differently and fix a few things found to late to address.

I have never seen the red glazing putty bleed through any primer whether it be AwlGrip epoxy primer or automotive primer. Its been around for years. I would think if it was troublesome it would nave been discontinued years ago.

Rich- So you can get the particles at Home Depot? Are they sold for outdoor decks? Are they stocked with the paints?

Sorry for the basic questions, but my local big box employees are beyond worthless...

Thanks,
Andrew

From Home Depot, if I remember right. Brand name is American Tradition Anti-skid particles. Directions say add to paint. I didn`t want to do that, so I put some in a seasonings shaker, and sprinkled it over the wet paint. Next day I rolled another coat of paint(AwlGrip) over it. Don`t overdo it with the sprinkles. You don`t want to make it hard to clean.

I have some flex mold that came right from whaler if anyone wants to try a section.

This is not gibco flex mold, this is original whaler mold that they sent me for warranty repairs. Its brown and has almost a cloth like feel to it versus the rubber feel of the Gibco Flex mold.

it still wont match your boat because your skid has worn down, the mold would match a boat that has never been used, but there would still be a transition area where your new gelcoat meets the old- this will show as a high spot.

Is flex mold used to put the non-skid pattern onto a wet gelcoat repair? If so, where could I find that for a 1991 Outrage 19?

Hey Rob, you ever thought about making some thin panels with nonskid and selling on line. All the discussion I see about how to apply different nonskid on the deck there seems to be a market. Guys would snatch up a panel they could glass in and finish. I saw you did this on you the whaler you redid a couple of years ago. I will take the first set for my project 19 when you have them ready.

Thanks Rich... I found some stuff at Home Depot, made by Behr, also intended for adding to paint then applying.

I sprinkled it on the wet paint with a salt shaker a little too soon, as something happened with the surface tension and the paint migrated around the particles... leaving the rest of the surface lacking in paint.

I tried again when the paint was just barely tacky and it worked great.

wayne- the price per panel would be crazy. Between producing the panel and shipping it would not be a feasable item. Add to it that it would not match in color to the boat being applied and it does not sound realistic anymore.

The largest flex mold I purchased was something like 4x12 and it was close to $700 if I recall correctly.

So I will continue with my awl grip grip tex plan.
