Did the originals [Boston Whaler 13-foot boats] use 1x's or 2x's for the thwart benches[?] I'm almost to the point of ordering wood for my tiller steering layout, and was wondering if anybody could help me out on board size. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Marty

The thwart seats on the vintage 13s were exactly 1 inch thick, so typically the raw wood is 5/4 milled to that thickness.

To add to Dennis`s post, the width of rough cut lumber is usually about a little over 12 inches. The thickness of the seat clamps is 3/4", and the front hatch cover, is also 3/4". The wood originally used was Philippine mahogany, but is hard to find now, so most used Sapele (African mahogany), which has a ribbon striped grain, looks better, is more dense(harder and stronger), and costs about $5 a board foot in my area. Bd.ft is 12"x12"x1".
