My boat trailer has ST205-75R-14 tires on it which are radials. I need a spare tire and rim, but the local sporting goods store has only a bias ply tire in this size. Any reason the bias tire would not make a suitable spare?

I believe it would serve as a spare. I would use it only long enough to repair or replace the flat or damaged tire.

Trailer tires should be replaced for age related issues when they are between five and eight years old regardless of tread wear. Because it is not always easy to find the sizes required at local tire outlets it's a good idea to locate or order new tires a few weeks earlier than the date you wish to replace them. When the time comes to replace your trailer tires you may want to use one of your existing radial tires for your new spare.

mtwilling, no reason to worry about it, a bias will work fine. I won't bother you with my credentials as a high-speed test driver and development engineer for Firestone Tire & Rubber for 38 years.JLW
