I have a split console 1997 Dauntless with a 135 Johnson. When driving the boat at speed and doing sharp turns (pull tube or skier), the steering makes a clicking noise right behind the wheel.

I believe the issue is missing teeth on the rack and pinion steering system. There is one cable going into the steering box so I am assuming that is what I have ( it is not hydraulic). Steering is not impacted.

It looks to me to be the original Boston Whaler supplied system. It is essentially a 6 x 9" box behind the wheel with the steering cable going in the top starboard side and a short cable housing coming out the bottom starboard side. It looks to me as though the cable does a 180 degree turn inside this box and the excess protrudes into the short tube coming out the bottom.

Question - Can I just replace this with a Teleflex rack and pinion steering kit like I see at West Marine or is there some trick/special part required? The system at West Marine look as though the cable goes straight back and forth behind the wheel instead of the 180 degree turn my system has.
