I have a 13 footer and i have a long shaft outboard. What needs to be done to ensure the motor is mounted correctly? |

That depends on what 13 footer you have. The transom has been redesigned at least three times in the procudtion of the classic 13 foot Whaler. |

I have a 1986 with the cutout in the transom. |

86's do not have a cutout in the transom. Should be flat across the stern. If motor has clamps you will also see where you can mount a bolt on each side which you better do for safety. If it is a 40hp that has the standard BIA mount then you will need to mount all 4 bolts. |

Measure the height of the transom. It will be either 15 or 20 inches. If it is 20 inches you are good to go with your long shaft. If it is 15 inches, then get a short shaft kit for your motor or gin up some kind of 5 inch spacer. Your frist choice should be the correct engine shaft length. |

Based on his other thread: http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/017085.html It sounds like this guy ended up with a boat which has had it's original full height transom cut down by a previous owner. What a shame. |

That's a different guy and a different boat. pogie's boat may be a 1972 or earlier 13 footer. If it is blue gel coat on the inside, it is notched for a 15" motor. If it is Desert Tan gel coat in the inside, it was designed for a 20" motor. Beginning in 1985 or 1986, the transom was redesigned to illuminate the curvature int he motor mounting area and simplify the process for motor with the (then new) BIA standardized bolt pattern. |

Oops. I got confused switching back and forth between windows and thought that it was he who posted in both threads. |
