I have a 2006,50hp merc. on a pontoon boat. I ran it yesterday and went to raise the engine and oil started spilling out of the engine cover. I took the cover off and oil is in the bottom of the of engine housing.I did not see a leak on the hoses or a crack in the tank. What might be the problem?

Just an idea: My '04 40 Yamaha 2-stroke was leaking oil into the engine well out of the cover. I discovered it only happened when the engine was tilted fully up. Yamaha has the oil reservoir on the port side of the engine with a fill cover on top of the engine shroud, and a rubber snap-down cap with a small rubber "trough" around the filler neck inside the engine cover. Turns out that if the oil reservoir is filled past the "full" mark, or possibly just near it - the oil seeps out the rubber stopper into the lower engine shroud, and finds its way out of the housing and drips into the motor well, and runs down inside the lower part of the housing also...

It may be the filler cap on the oil tank. My 2001 75hp Mercury 2 stoke has leaked since new. The design of the filler cap on many Mercury oil tanks is poor. |
