Okay,I may be opening myself up to get blasted but here goes. There doesn't seem to be a good location for stereo speakers on the 170 Montauk that generates good directional stereo sound throughout the boat. Since there is already access to the area under the starboard stern seat/step on the 170 Montauk could a speaker be mounted on the port side in a hollowed out area as well. My thoughts were to cut a hole for wiring access and speaker mounting in the face of the port seat/step, remove enough foam for a round speaker to be flush mounted. Coating any exposed foam with resin or epoxy prior to mounting speaker in newly fabricated "enclosure". running the wire would be accomplished with a steel electricians fish tape carefully worked through the foam from port to starboard into the existing access area under the starboard seat. At that point both left and right channel wires would go into the rigging tunnel and up to the console. Okay have at it guys what are your feelings on this. All input welcome.

I had a similar idea but to add storage on the port side. I was told by Boston Whaler that I would void the warranty by cutting a hole and removing any foam since it all helps with the structure. In addition to that, a speaker needs to have a certain amount of air space BEHIND the speaker so the cone can move in and out. If you look into speaker designing, you will find how many cubic inches of dead air space you need behind the speaker. That is why speakers are in boxes to contain the right amount of space. If too big or in your case too small, the speaker won't sound very good and probably not have much bass if too small. |
