Busted my prop yesterday off my 1985 25hp merc. I searched the web and found props but all of them have rubber hubs. A Marina guy told me not to buy one with a rubber hub because the prop will slip, but I can't find one with a metal hub. Do you think he's mad because I didn't buy his $130.00 prop or is he right about the rubber hub? I found a Solas Amita prop for $65.00 plus shipping and $65.00 to me makes a big difference. Anybody else have the same opinion on rubber hubs?

You either misunderstood what the "Marina guy" told you, or he is a complete idiot.

There are no "metal hub" propellers made to fit a 25 HP motor. In fact, there are no Flo-Torq hub props that will fit either. A press-in rubber hub is the only kind of prop you will find to fit your Mercury 25.

It will not slip unless you strike something, in which case it does exactly what it is supposed to do, protect your motor by letting go before damage is done.

Thanks - I put words in my own mouth. I assumed that since he said "don't buy one with a rubber hub", I assumed the other style is a metal hub. After taking off my prop, it seems that my hub is fused and I haven't forced its removal yet. Maybe there is a rubber sleeve in there? I'll force it out when I get my new prop.

You do not necessarily see rubber in propellers with press-in rubber hubs. The rubber is between the propeller casting itself and the metal splined sleeve that slides over the propeller shaft.

You cannot remove or install a press-in rubber hub without a very powerful press. Prop shops have these, most boat owners do not.

If you can find a prop shop nearby it will be cheaper to fix it...no mater how dinged it is.
