Author Topic:   Johnson, Evinrude Lower Unit Compatibility

I have a 2003 115 Johnson (J115PLSTS) with a bad lower unit gear case. It is the 60-degree V4.

I have been doing some research on different OMC V4 lower units and fitment. The 60-degree V4's ran from (I believe) 1995 until now. This lower unit is way more expensive than the older cross flow V4 engines, and that is why I am looking into this.

I have learned the 60-degree V4 engines have a two-piece drive shaft. The older, cross-flow, V4 engines were one piece drive shafts until 1990, and then in 1991 these cross-flow V4 engines went to the two-piece drive shaft. None of this is absolute, just doing a bunch of reading. I have read that you can swap the 60-degree V4 upper drive shaft and the shift rod with the 1991 and newer cross-flow V4 two-piece drive shaft lower units, and they will bolt up.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks--Rick

Seahorse will know for sure. What boat do you have this engine on? What transom height?
I'm thinking you have an engine that has a long shaft (20-inch) and it has the 5-inch extension on it to make it an extra long (25-inch), that's why it's a two-piece. That's just my opinion, not fact.

Both the 90-degree and 60-degree engines are 20-inch and both are two-piece drive shafts. I have checked a link that has drawings and part numbers called www.ishopmarine.com . It is a fantastic internet spot for information and has good prices, too.

Thanks,
Rick

Just a little update on this compatibility question concerning the V4 OMC lower units.

According to a local shop I have learned that these lower units will interchange.

The 1991 and up lower units that are two piece shafts are as simple as removing the water pump and swapping the upper shaft and shift rod.

The single piece drive shaft lower units can be used too but these would need to swap the upper and lower shafts. That would mean the unit would have to be disassembled and that is a problem for some of us.

Sure would like to hear another authority on this just verify.
Seahorse, you out there?

Thanks for every one's help.

The crossflow would fit with shaft changes but it not th same looking. Len has a nice foot for a great price, I will call him.

Thanks,
I have Emailed Len,
He replied once last night but am waiting for him to get back with me again about price and condition of the lower unit, maybe a picture. His lower unit would be the ticket with no hassles.
Thanks,
Rick

See a dealer as he has the info and part numbers of the different driveshafts and the measurements in the back of the Genuine Parts and Accessories Catalog.

In 1992 the crankshaft and driveshafts were redesigned and not interchangable with earlier ones.

Gearcases with single piece driveshafts can have the 2 piece driveshafts installed, but the prices will knock you down, plus the pinion gear and bearing housing will have to be re-shimmed using the expensive specialized tool that dealers have.

Seahorse, thanks you for your reply.

The 1992 goes along (pretty close) to the 1991 data I have been reading. The cost of a dealer swap would increase prices to the point of it not being sensible with the one piece drive shaft lower units.

If I can not find a 60 degree V4 lower unit I can maybe find the early two piece drive shaft lower unit at a decent price and swap the upper shaft.

Thanks again to everyone for their help.

Len's lower is a 95-96, not a 94.

That is what I am thinking too.

Wish I could come to the flip party, bet it will be fun.

Thanks,
Rick

There is no doubt I could be wrong about the year. It was one year newer or older than the 1995 boat it was on.

Little update on the 2003 Johnson lower unit repair.

I received the lower unit from Len, thanks. It is from a 1995 or a 1996 60 degree V4 engine. I found the two lower units to have differences. The 2003 has a hole and passage for a speedometer tap, the 1995/1996 does not. The shift shaft is shorter on the 1995/1996 by 3/4". I was able to swap shift shafts, install a new water pump kit and all went well from there.

I am cleaning up the engine and doing some touch-up paint. The engine should be on the Montauk within the next week pending on things going on. I will report back on how it runs and get some performance data. I have the North Star F210 fuel monitor so data should be pretty good. I will be trying the Turning Point 19 prop and the engine will be installed on a 2" set-back.

Thanks again for every one's help.

I have a 1994 Evinrude 140. I need a lower unit. It's a 25-inch engine, with two-piece drive shaft. I am totally confused on what units will bolt up. I'm reading a V4 or V6 unit will work. I am not concerned about gear ratio. Since my engine is a looper, can I use a unit with a one piece drive shaft? What about the shift rods: Do they interchange? I got this engine with no lower, so I'm starting from scratch. Thanks

I'm still trying to find out if a cross-flow, one-piece driveshaft lower unit will fit my 1994 140 looper. The interchange charts I've seen do not nclude a 140 looper: Only the cross-flows. Is there a difference in the driveshaft lengths between a cross-flow engine and a looper engine? Thanks!
