I have a 1990 Mercury Black Max. I'm getting oil mixed with my fuel in the line that connects to the motor. Unless I misunderstand the process, the oil-fuel mix shouldn't occur until later in the process. I'm getting considerable smoke (which seems would be the result of too much oil in the fuel), difficulty starting, and poor performance after starting. How is the oil getting into my fuel line? Seal leak? Or am I way off base?

Refer to:

Refer to the illustration. Refer to item with callout 6. Your check valve is probably bad.

Jim, Bluemoon2096,

I believe that valve prevents gas from entering oil lines not oil getting into gas line as stated. I appears to be located at oil inlet to fuel pump. Mercury has a "Caution" note in my SM not to use an electric lift pump with more than 2 psi pressure. Assume that could prevent oil flow.

"2-PSI CHECK VALVE--This valve prevents gasoline from being forced into the oil lines."

There appears to be a couple of other check valves within the pump itself. Maybe one of those could cause the problem?

Did this problem just start? What is meant by poor performance after starting? Is the link rod/pump adjusted correctly?

I appreciate your suggestions and it gives me a couple of areas to go after. Could it be simply I need a new fuel supply line and associated hardware? It's 18 years old. If the seal is bad at the engine connection could the oil leak back into the line just due to gravity?

Smoke means too much oil in the cyls.
Im no expert but here goes...

First thing I would do is check to make sure all the plugs are burning evenly. One or two darker than the others could be a carb is too lean or plugged causing vacuum that sucks more oil into the cyl than the others.
