I've been lurking here for years, but wanted to register now that I've got my Whaler ready to go in the water.

You folks are the greatest and I've learned a LOT from your posts. So here's one to contribute a little back into the community.

I wrote up a blog entry that tells the story of fixing up my beat up old Whaler. I'm not a complete-restoration type guy, but decided that I'd put the boat back in shape after it sat for 10 years in the garage. I also combined the boat with a 2-stroke Yamaha 40 that came off our old pontoon boat.

Here's a link to the blog post;

Lotsa before and after pictures. If you're thinking about a gel-coat, take a look at the results of just acid-washing the boat. I am tickled pink with the way this came out.

It hasn't been in the water yet but I'll post an update to the blog post, plus more pictures, when it does. Based on what I've read here, I told Jim [the fellow that did the restoration] that I was expecting low-30's for top speed. His guess is mid-to-high 30's. I'll take the GPS and we'll see. :-)

Some fun!

The new transom looks very nice. The boat has made quite a comeback.

When the transom was replaced, was the external glass shell preserved (and modified to bring it up to 20")? Nice looking resto, amazing how well the rest of the hull came back. From the looks of the scum line, it appears that the boat was swamped for a while before stored. What happened?

About the fuel tank -- I don't know where that came from, but Jim (at Imperial Boat Repair, Hudson, WI -- 651-735-1258) would know. It just appeared one day, after I told him that I thought it would be a good idea to put the gas tank up forward in order to offset the weight of the heavier motor.

The scum line came from the way that we parked the boat when we had it at our cabin. We'd just tie it off to the pontoon boat that was beached on the shore. The old transom was rotten, so it weighed a lot more than the new one does. The combination meant that over the years it sat lower and lower at the stern and that scum line reflects the way it rode.

The transom is a complete rebuild, Jim ripped it all out and started over. The reason this project started was because I worried that hanging that heavy 40 on the old rotten transom would be really risky, especially since we tow that boat everywhere now. I could just imagine going over a few bumps and seeing my motor rip that transom off the back of the boat and winding up in the road. I should have tried to get a picture when the transom was completely off -- but imagine a boat with no transom and you've got the picture.

I've taken the boat out on a shake-down cruise that lasted about 10 minutes. Then, some residual crud left in the motor went through the carbs and we limped back to the dock on one cylinder. Off today for another try, with newly-cleaned carbs. I got it up to full throttle and it's darn smooth, easy to handle. But I was only at WOT for about 10 seconds before the carb-goo came through, so I didn't have time to do a speed check on the GPS. Maybe today I'll have more luck.

An update -- The motor made it through a full half-day on the water a few days ago. Contributing another data-point to the Speed Conversation, I got 28.5mph on the GPS running wide open throttle (WOT) with a couple of us and about 10 gallons of fuel on board. Some fun!
