I have a 1992 Montauk with a 1992 Johnson, the VRO works. The engine will not hold speed unless I squeeze the primer bulb and I suspect a new fuel pump is in order. I replaced the Pate fuel tank early this season and had previously replaced the connectors at both ends of the fuel line. There is no gasoline smell under any circumstances. As I returned to the dock, after a shortened day on the water, I had to squuze the primer bulb, even at a fast idle (1000 to 1200 RPM). Does anyone have any experience with similar problems? Any trouble shooting or repair suggestions?

Check your fuel pick up first (easiest), try a new bulb and spend the money for an OMC one. Sounds like it is your fuel pump in the vro, however, you can get a kit to rebuilt the pump from OMC. Good luck

A fast way to determine if the problem is in the fuel tank, fuel hose, or primer bulb would be to borrow another tank. Run the engine on a new tank. If it still has a problem with lack of fuel, your remedy is most like in the fuel pump.

From his description it sure sounds like the fuel pump is at fault or something between the bulb and engine. If it were plugged upstream of the bulb the bulb would collapse and his squeezing the bulb would not help.

My thanks to all for your responses. It turns out to be the fuel pump, which fortunately an area mechanic has in stock and can install tomorrow (before I leave for a four day fishing trip).

If that doesn't fix it, check the fuel lines. They can look fine on the outside and be collapsed on the inside. Especially that fancy silver colored line.
