VRO unit in 2005 50hp Johnson has completely stopped.

Can this be replaced by a regular fuel pump same as was on the older 48 hp?

You can rebuild the vro pump and just use the gas pump part/side, might be cheaper than purchasing a new fuel pump. Plug off the oil part, mix your oil and gas, get rid of your oil tank and lines, the engine will smoke a little more but never again worry about it not working.

Or you could just replace the fuel pump and use the engine as was intended.

The pumps are expensive (~$400) but the rebuild kits are cheap (~$20). From the original description, it's not really clear it's a pump problem - could be a blockage or air leak in the oil line.
