I have a 2005 13 ft Whaler 130 Sport. It is powered by a 40 HP four stroke. Our State law permits a 12 year old to drive a boat powered by a motor less than 10 HP. My grandson is about to turn 12. I am considering temporarily repowering my Whaler with a 9.9 HP four stroke. I appreciate it will have limited performance, but we live on a lake, and it might be a ball for a 12 year old to safely putt aournd in. Has anyone got any experiemce with this? If I purchase a 9.9 HP, do I get a long shaft or short shaft? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks... Dave

Long shaft. And the best summer of his life. I had a friend who's son at age 13 had a 12 foot Sears Ted Williams boat with about a 5 horse Suzuki on it. The kid could putter around all day, all summer. Best summer of his life. |

I would get a set of oars, and teach him how to row the 13. Leave the oars in the boat he may need them one day... |

Dave, I have a classic (1980) 13' with a 9.9hp Mercury and it performs well with two adults. It will plane easily and run 20mph per gps with one aboard. Don't know about the 130 Sport but it is heavier than the classic 13. Get the right prop and it should plane and go like a bat.... Those oars are a great idea! Happy Whalin'... Clark... SCN |

At 600lbs I doubt it will plane. For what a 9.9 4S costs you are better off buying him a used 13 with a used 9.9 on it(or seperate). I have also seen used 05+ 11 Tenders with 9.9's for about $3k |

Part of my challenge is physical space at my dock. I have a 22 ft as well as the 13 ft, and both are on lifts. I can't moor another boat, thus the idea of temporarily modifying the 130 Sport. Craigslist currently has a 9.9 HP 4 stroke for $750. I figure I have all winter to spot a deal. |

It will have to be a Merc so controls work. It has to be a 20" shaft. The engine will also mar the transom because it is a much smaller clamp mount. You would want to bolt it on so more drill holes as well. How often does kid visit? A 12' Alum boat cold be thrown off the dock/bulkhead in seconds. |

Grandson lives 15 minutes away. We see a lot of him in the summer. Once or twice, he comes and stays for 4 or 5 days. I am not worried about the cosmetics of the transom. I just want to see the boat used a lot. If I help create the "best summer ever" as described by Fishgutz, I will be a real happy camper. |

My classic 13' would plane with a 9.9 and just me in it. Not real fast, but it would plane, even with me sitting on the transom. And I weighed 200# at the time. |

If you don't want to drill extra holes in the transom, could you put on a set back bracket using the same holes in the transom and the smaller bolt pattern on the bracket? My friend's son who had the "best summer ever" always wore a lifejacket as did all his friends around the lake. All the parents around the lake kept an eye on the kids from shore and from their boats, making sure they wore them. They also always sat on those throwable cushions. He would go from house to house all around the lake. Everyone knew him. Everyone watched him. Not a single bad incident. Funny, he got so used to the lifejacket, he'd come into the house to eat with it on. |

My son had a 12' Jon boat with a 8 HP Mariner while young, 12 to 16. I will say it is one of the best things a parent can do for their kids. It keeps them off the streets and most likely drugs.Great idea! Have fun, Rick |

I am the biggest 4-stroke fan here, but for this case maybe a 2-stroke would be better? Purchase price should be lower, maintenance for you would be nill (no engine oil changes) and I am guessing that at 9.9HP the 2-stroke might be lighter and it sounds like weight is a concern. As far as the transom; clamp it on, don't drill holes, and use a safety chain. My dad's 9.9 merc has a hole next to the clamps to attach a chain and we use it for a safety chain and security lock. Even if the engine comes loose, the chain won't let it over the top of the transom. Whatever you end up with, I am sure he will have a blast, good luck! |

I stopped in at my local Boston Whaler dealer and they suggested I visit another boat/marine dealer who is the authoriized Mercury dealer in the area and who actually sells them their Mercury outboards. The BW dealer claimed you want this marine dealer to make a transition plate, both to make mounting the 9.9 HP easy without drilling new holes, but also to get the cavitaion plane of the 9.9 positioned correctly in relation to the bottom of the boat at the transom. I will stop in at the Mercury boat/marine dealer this weekend. Also found at the BW dealer that the electric cable (plug) connection at the motor changes over time. They said don't assume you can just plug into an older motor. This is turning into a fun research project and I so appreciate all the comments from fellow Whalers! |
