Spectrum CC told me today they don't carry colors for [Boston Whaler OUTRAGE] models. Has anyone found a close match without having to do a custom color?

They probably meant OUTRAGE GRAY, which is a color. Your boat is DESERT TAN inside and out; get it for 1972-93.

If the boat is a standard Outrage from 1987, not a commercial model, its color is DESERT TAN, and it is available from Spectrum.

By the way, this was Meegan Raume's (from Spectrum) reply:

"We do not carry Outrage colors. You can send us a sample from the boat and we can take a read of it and see if it matches anything we have in stock. We can also do a custom match, they are at a gallon only."

She must have misunderstood what you were asking.

There have been a great number of Outrage models form Boston Whaler over the years with many different colors of gel coat used.

Spectrums sells several of them including the Desert Tan, 1972-1993 that was used on both the interior and exterior of the 1987 Outrage 18, 20, 22 and 25.

Color matching is a skill that requires specialized visual acuity. Most people who have not trained their eyes for this task often have poor skill in color matching. Thirty-five years of professional experience in trying to get multiple video cameras to provide matching pictures has helped me become more sensitive to color matching, but I still find it a difficult task to accomplish. The nature of the light used for illumination, the luster and reflectivity of the surface, and the particular hue of color involved are all important factors in color matching.

Boats that are over 20 years old are often affected by fading, oxidation, loss of luster, and other problems, and their current color may be far from their original hue.

Having just bought "color matched" gel coat from Spectrum for a '76 15 Sport I think you'd be better off buying some white gel coat locally and tinting it yourself.

I say that because you pay a hefty premium for Spectrum's color matching and if it's not really close than what's the point of paying that premium? A gallon from Spectrum is over $250.00 plus shipping.

jimh is absolutely correct that getting the color spot on is very difficult and time consuming, but it's very doubtful Spectrum's will be right and you'll have to tint that anyway.

Gel coat tinting pigments are very strong and a few drops will effect quite a change in color. This is definitely a task where patience is a virtue.

With all that said we are talking about a desert tan 87 outrage. I have bought MANY products from Spectrum and on at least 8 different hulls, the desert tan was ALWAYS a dead ringer in color.

Lastly for people with outrage grey hulls(pre84?), get a can of Tempo OMC white from 1971-76(not the 77-present) I believe and it is a dead ringer as well. Take that to a place and have it duplicated.

I've used the desert tan from Spectrum on a couple of different projects, and it is a very close match, considering the boats are 20+ years old. I have had to lighten them slightly with a little white pigment, but only slightly. You will never get a 100% color match on any repair like this. It would be like trying to match a spot on the hood of your car, that's why they paint the entire hood, and you can still pick up on the color variation when looking at entire car. The Spectrum color gets you really close, something most of us can't do on our own because we simply don't have the color theory training required to be successful.

Thanks for the experienced advice. Desert tan is ordered, along with white pigment in case I need to lighten it a touch. I'll post how it well it matches. Many thanks!
