What am I doing wrong? Both [Steersman Nuts] have failed. The gasket has popped out of the nut. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d137/jmartin-/DSCF7536.jpg John |

You sure you have the right size Steersman? How many hours on the Steersman? The O-ring? I replace the O-ring every 100 hours because they start leaking

I have run those for decades, STOP pumping them full of grease...once a year...maybe? |

Three years old on the nuts. I did not over pack them with grease. Will try a new O-ring. Thanks, John |

To figure out the right O-ring, measure the diameter of the shaft accurately (slide calipers or micrometer), and take that number and the old O-ring to the HW store. Find an O-ring with the right inside diameter that looks right.

In case you don't have calipers, take the nut with you to the store. |

Hello At the risk of getting booted for self-promotion, we felt compelled to correct some misunderstandings mentioned in this thread and to try to save you guys some hassle. @Jmartin: the "steersman" in your picture is not one of ours, but a knockoff. Theirs has a "wiper" instead of an O-ring that frequently comes out and causes the messy condition you are experiencing. We have never had a report of an O-ring popping out and frankly these knockoffs give us a bad name. @Chuck: If you do have a genuine Steersman Steering Guard, you don't need to search the local hardware stores for a replacement O-ring. All Steersman Steering Guards come with a spare. Not only that, we will send you a replacement free of charge if you send us a self-addressed stamped envelope. See our Website http://www.steersman.com/ for the address. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions. |

Looks like your steering tube is to short, not enough threads. Also the one in the front of the picture either slip through the nut or it is not put on correctly. Is this a twin engine set up or is it a twin cable system? |

If you need an o-ring (as stated might not be a Steerman) make sure you get the right thickness also. |

Sorry Steersman people, this must not be your product. The failure was not an O-ring and it was not packaged with spares. I must have bought a cheap knockoff. I just glued the wipers back on and when they fail again, I will make sure to purchase a quality Steersman product. This is a single engine, dual cable set up. Adjustment work has been done to eliminate the wheel play and everything is working fine so far. John

Before I read down through the thread, I was going to post that the fittings shown in the photo are NOT Steersman's product. Just re-confirming what the manufacturer has indicated. The Steersman nut is a much deeper profile. I currently have five 1" Steersman's in use (for Mercs), with no problems. |
