I've had this wonderful old outboard motor since 1980. I have hauled it around for many years. Moving from WI to CO an now to AR. I purchase it for $50 bucks. I used it to take may two small children fishing for pan fish when they were very young, on the lakes in Wisconsin. It was a temperamental old gal an I did find myself rowing the old john boat back to the shore on a few of our fishing excursions. Now I want to take my grand kids out to do the same (minus the rowing part) ha. So here's what I have an I'm hoping someone can help me through the rebuild. I.D. motor, parts availability an things I should be aware of.

Numbers on engine block: 578791 / TD 20

Thank you in advance.

I would first remove the plugs and spray some marvel oil in the cylinders and then check the compression,(its easy and if there is a problem the engine might not be worth the repair.) If its ok I would then change the water pump and the lower gear oil. Rebuilt the carb and replace the spark plugs. I would also look at the fuel pump diaphram(should be replaced) Sounds like your engine was only used in freash water so thats a big plus. If the engine was well taken care of should be a nice little engine. After the above I would try to start it, should crank right up. Try Boats.net for parts (might need a little starter spray for a kick start).... Good luck to you

The TD-20 was a 5hp motor built from 1946 to 1949 or so.

The fuel mix was 16:1 and it used a #105 grease in the gearcase, not oil.

The points are very expensive and hard to obtain - set to .020"

Plug is a J8J gapped to .025"

The water pump is a rubber rotor, not a vaned impeller like more modern motors.

What a cool motor and great buy - - take care of it, listen to Seahorse and you will have many years more of fun.
