I'm getting ready to replace the throtle/shift control cables on my 1984 Montauk. I've already purchased the appropriate length and style cables for my 90hp Evinrude. The attachment looks fairly straight forward at the outboard, just make sure to ID the throtle and shift cable. Is there any trick to the attachment at the binacle? I have a top mount single lever control from the same vintage as the hull, electric tilt and trim. I'm guessing just remove the screws that hold the binacle to the console and I'll be able to see the attachment from there? Thanks for the help. Mike

IF you have the binnacle control that has the rectangular rubber coated neutral button on top, be sure that the shift cable is connected to the inner hole of the shift lever inside the control for proper cable travel. If mounted in the outer hole, there is too much "throw" and the control will bind when shifting. |

This reply is from a post in Jan that I pulled up trying to fix the OMC binnacle control that came with my power plant, an 88hp Evinrude.Existing shift cable was set up by a dealer on the outer hole. It would go into gear okay, but cable is pushed too far as noted above. Also, reverse throttle had no function. It would idle only. After placing control cable in the proper (inner) hole, cable travel is correct now, doesn't bind, and somehow it gave back reverse throttle control. Whew, dodged a trip to the shop. Safe to say I would not have figured it out in a timely manner. Thank you seahorse for that quick and easy fix. |
