Going to completely refinish the interior this spring, down to bare wood and at least 6 or 7 coats of varnish. Can I get away with a quart of varnish, or am I going to need a gallon?

Unfortunately you are going to need more than a quart and less than a gallon. It took me almost 2.5 quarts to refinish the interior on a 13' Super Sport using 7 coats. Since there is a little more wood on the 15', I think you are looking at 3 quarts. Good luck to you, it's well worth it.

Here's how the 13' came out:

Thanks Tom! That's more or less what I figured, but thought I would check before ending up with a lot extra. Your boat looks awesome!

Spar varnish keeps pretty well actually, I have had a few cans around for years. You have to make sure the can seals well. I often go to commercial paint suppliers and buy brand new, unused cans to store the remaining material and throw away the original container.

When you store it for any length of time expect it to have a layer of cured finish over the liquid when you open the can. I generally pick that film off and trash it, then splash some thinner in the material because it will be thick and stir gently for a while and then pour it through a filter cone into either another clean can or into my painter's pail for application.

Nothing to trip about.

Nautical told me 2 quarts for a 15 interior....you can always buy more if getting low on 2nd quart. Go with the best since it is so labor intensive.

If you use all of two quarts you laying it on way two thick. He probably said two quarts becuase it will take more than one, and buying pints is not economical. Remember THIN coats but not so thin that it doesn`t flow, and leaves dull spots. Thin the first coat 10%. Don`t varnish in cold weather Needs to be at least 70 degrees.

Don`t drink beer while varnishing, Nick. It will look great when your done, but tomorrow you might be sorry,LOL.
