Hi guys! I recently boat a rage jet boat from a buddy of mine that could never get the overheating alarm to go off. After I purchased the boat I removed the engine and uninstalled the theromstats and poppet valves, flushed the engine and filled it with salt-a-way. I let the engine set for a week before reinstalling. I just took her out on her first run and after about an hour the alarm starts chirping before slowly becoming steady. My question is...Can you test the temperature of the engine while its running in the water? And what is the temp specs for this motor? Has anyone heard of a bad temp sending unit?
Thanks for any help....Sammy

I think most people use an infrared temperature gun and take the head temperature, when in the overheat mode. Heat sensors do go bad, but I would try the heat gun first. My Rage has the Yamaha, so I can't help with the numbers, but I would expect them to be in the 170 to 180 range.

Thanks I thought about that too. I will try it in the next few days. I guess 170 180 would be a good starting point. Thanks again.

Because the alarm starts out chirping before getting a steady tone, there may just be an electronic problem with the oil tank LOW OIL sensor circuit.

Disconnect the wires from the oil tank to the motor, then run the boat. If the problem goes away, then keep a visual check on the oil level or spend the bucks for an expensive new pickup and wiring assembly.

Will do. Thanks for your reply.

Does anyone have cooling flow diagrams for the 115 OMC?

OK I just got back from the lake. Yesterday when I came back in with the boat the overheating alarm was on steady. I backed the boat in this afternoon and started the boat. Alarm was on as soon as the motor started and would not shut off after starting with a cold motor. I let her run for a good 5 mins. before shuting her off. I unhooked both temp sensor wires (tan) and restarted, alarm still on. I shut her down and traced the tan and black wires from the oil tank to the port side of the motor at the black barrel connector with the stainless clip and unplugged it. Restated the motor and the alarm still on. After running for a few mins. with everything unplugged the alarm seemed to start loosing power like it was shorted to something and was losing its connection to what ever it was grounded too. Short to ground or faulty module? HELP! lol

Oh yea i forgot to mention I did take a infared Thermometer with me and checked both heads and muffler after running for about an hour. I got temp readings of no more than 150. i do have both thermotstats and poppet valves removed. Just thought I would add that.

I just got back from another run with the boat. As soon as i started the motor the alarm started sounding again. I reeached inside the console and grabbed the alarm module from the back side and started moving it around and it started changing its tone and slowly quit going off. does anyone know of a place to get the alarm module cheap?

I would try the discussion section of marinengine.com, under Johnson/Evinrude. The pros there can tell you what your issue is and where to get parts.

How is the the alarm module tested?

To test a specific electronic module, you will need the factory service manual. If you are serious about performing repairs on an engine, purchase the factory repair manual.

Ok, here is what I found. While the alarm was going off I removed the unit from the console and disconnected the tan wire and the alarm was still sounding. I just ordered a new module off Ebay. I'll post after I have it installed.

Which thread are you going to post in? You seem to have two or three simultaneous discussions about this problem.
