I have a 1992 Johnson 90-HP. I recently replaced my tilt trim unit with a used unit because the original unit had a bad leak. The new used unit that’s in now worked for a couple of cycles but now won’t go up. It works down but not up. The [electric] motor still runs when trying to go up just like it does when going down, and, on occasion, the [electric] motor sounds like some air my be trapped in the system when trying to go up. So I don’t think it is a electrical problem. I have checked fluid to make sure it is topped off and checked the manual release screw, which works fine. When screwed out I can manually raise and lower the motor and when screwed I can’t move the motor by hand. The [electric] motor runs when going down or trying to go up but the motor will not raise up. Any thoughts on what I can check for?

I have done my search on this. There are a lot of posts on this but I can’t find one that has the same problem a I have.

The trim system works mostly by weight and gravity in the downward motion. If the trim motor is working and pumping fluid sounds like you either have a blocked valve or air in the system--not enough fluid. On Boats.net, you can view your trim unit in an exploded view, which may help some. Good luck

Thanks for the help! I know I have enough fluid and it even builds pressure inside because when I unscrew the fill screw I can hear preasure being released. I don't know if that is normal or not. It also seems like it started when I toped-off the fluid with regular [power trim and tilt] fluid I bought at the boat store. Hope I put in the right kind of fluid.

Thanks for the link. The diagram helps and will be needed if I have to tear into the thing.

If you are serious about making a repair to the hydraulic portion of a power trim and tilt system, you will need to get the OEM service manual. The OMC or BRP manuals generally provide a thorough guide to the hydraulic system, a diagnostic procedure, and plenty of advice.
