When you open the by pass valve/screw (OMC) should both the trim and tilt rams retract/collapse or just the tilt? I just put my engine back together and the rams for the trim were out and would not retract with the opening of the bypass valve. I had to connect a battery and jump the connection to make the rams retract. None of the rams are leaking, and the system is full of fluid, and there is no air sound on movement. Just want to make sure this is normal. Thanks

A model number would help in knowing exactly which motor is in question.

Chances are you have the older style trim unit that is fastened to the stern brackets by 6 bolts. If so, then the trim rams do not retract when loosening the release screw. The motor will only tilt down to the top of the trim range.
