I'm considering adding a drain tube (through hull) to a sump area on my boat. There is currently no drain tube at this location, and it is fairly well "buried" within the boat.

Any suggestions on how to find the right location to begin drilling and techniques?

I don't want to take a drill to my "new to me" boat until I'm sure I'm right on and doing it the right way.

Thanks.

Advice and instructions from someone who has done this before would be wonderful.

Dave

Match the location of an existing drain tube in another 25 foot model on either the inside or outside of the hull.

Drill a 1/4" pilot hole through the hull with an extra long drill bit to see where it comes out on the other side. This should be easy as you have a 1" diameter area or correction is the 1/4" hole is not exactly where you want it.

By using a pilot hole you make sure you do not drill two 1" holes on each side of the hull that do not align.

Once you are satisfied with the locations, drill the 1" holes through the hull skins and core the foam.

Install drain tube as usual.

Be sure to add the 2" Perko Clam Shell on the outside to act as a ventui and protect the drain tube like all the other drain tubes extending through the bottom of the hull.

Dave,
You may want to consider going with the newer style plastic drain tube for a new install. It requires a slightly larger hole, but in theory, it would be the last time you had to do it. Since access is pretty lousy in the cuddy sump, I went with the plastic style (purchased from Twin Cities as a Whaler Part no.) instead of the brass. It was still a pain to install, but I don't have to worry about it anymore.

On the 22 Cuddy, there is a Beckson plate in the deck approximately above the sump, just aft of the cuddy doors. This was a key access point during the installation.

Why would you put in the brass thru hulls if you are going to drill a 1" hole in the hull? I just removed the 2 1" tubes in my 88 revenge and replaced them with real 1" thru hulls with a wide mushroom and a nut to secure them from the inside.

A cast bronze through hull is great, but the size of the head and nut prohibits them from being used in about 99 percent of the drain locations in Boston Whaler hulls.

Brass drain tubes, on the other hand, will fit in tight spots, have a very low lip and can accommodate angles to the hull of up to 25 degrees, something cast bronze and preformed plastic drain tubes simply cannot do.

Tom,

Good point. However if you are going to drill a new hole and have an area for the nut I would certainly use a 1" bronze thru hull for that application.

How does one get a 2" x 2" Perko Clam Shell Ventilator to fit over the head of a cast bronze through hull?
