In my younger days I did everything like changing my oil, brake pads, painting the house, putting up wallpaper and so forth because I had plenty of time and no money. Alas, time is in short supply these days. With my Montauk getting new power and new gel coat inside and out, it subsequently deserves re-finished wood surfaces, too. I'd love to ship the wood components to a contract refinisher. Anybody have experience with someone who does this kind of refinishing work? Bill in NC

You should call Mike Stennett at Nautical Lumber. Not only does he build everything you could ever need for a Whaler but, he also does refinishing as well. His refinishing quality is exactly like his woodworking....next to none. Typically you would ship him all of the parts, he refinishes them and ships them back ready to install. Thanks for this information. I spoke with Mike this morning and will be shipping the parts to him for evaluation. |

Call me crazy, but I enjoy doing the brightwork myself. I did all of the wood trim and RPS of a Cohassett II a year ago for $150 - sanded off old finish, did some minor repairs, did 3 coats of Captain's varnish. He pulled the wood, bought the varnish and did the reinstall himself. |

mgeiger, you are not crazy, rather you are to be admired. I thought about doing it myself, but flat out do not have the time. Running a lean business in 2010 has taken a toll on my available time. |
