I am getting ready to install the Moeller 24 g tank on my new montauk 170. The install looks pretty straight forward. Is 3M5200 acceptable for a bedding compound on the rear bracket screws? What size brass hose barb is required? Thread and hose size.

3M's 5200 is an adhesive and sealant.

For bedding the screws, a general marine sealant is all that is necessary. One brand found in most marine supply stores is Boat Life.

A dab of sealant around the top of the shank, under the head of the screw, is recommended.

The rear brackets will have no wood underneath for the screws to bite into that is why i am wondering about the 5200.

3M 5200 is great for sealing screws. Use it if it is what you have on hand. Its adhesive qualities are grossly overstated around here.

I fill the screw hole with caulk first, then place the piece of hardware over the hole, then install the fastener. This is the only really good way to ensure the hole is fully coated.

3m 4200 will hold very well and likely not take gel coat off if you ever have to remove the brackets like 5200 would.

If the fiberglass does not have any backing, the screw biting the fiberglass *may* suffice, but an adhesive caulk will neither add strength nor impair your ability to remove the screw later. It's just for sealing.
