Has anyone successfully installed a piano hinge on their bow locker of an Outrage? It is very cumbersome keeping the bow locker open to retrieve things, or just to deploy the anchor, on my 18 Outrage. I was thinking about installing a piano hinge on the port side, but wanted to have it recessed in such a way as it being mostly unseen. The problem I see is alignment. FISHNFF |

Do not use a piano (strip) hinge. It will require dozens of holes and collect dirt and resist draining. Use two short side hinges, either stainless steel or chrome plated bronze. Thsi si what Whaler installed on the Outrage 18 in later years. |

From a similar discussion June 1, 2008: "My 1988 Outrage 18 bow anchor locker cover was hingeless and unattached in any other way when I bought the boat as its third owner. I can't understand why the prior owners hadn't taken care of this problem, since the boat had been used in the ocean in Southern California. Tom Clark walked me through the simple installation of starboard-side bolted-through hinges, and I decided to use fairly long strips of Velcro to hold the hatch cover down, which worked very well for me. Tony Now don't get me started about the lack of midships springline cleats on the classic Whalers..." |

Thanks. I wanted to keep the deck clear and flat. Guess that's not possible. 2 SS hinges it is. Thanks. |

OK There are a bazillion hinges out there. I'd like to go SS or chrome plated brass or bronze. What style was OEN in later years? Thanks, |

I recommend you use a pair of Perko #987 Shortside hinges. |

I replaced the bench seat on my Nauset years ago with a RPS, and used a brass piano-type hinge on it. (I didn't have the benefit of CW back then!) If I had to do it again I would have used something different (as has been suggested here). but I have not had any problems with the set up I have.... |

I know this is not an 18 hatch, but thought it could give you some ideas. This is on my 15. I've been wanting to do this for years...I'm very happy with the way it turned out, especially that notch for the anchor line!!! To re-enforce the screw holes for the hinges, I epoxied them, then re-tapped the holes and coated the screws with 42 or 5200. Thats a cheap snap spring holding it open, which they make larger ones for the extra weight of the 18 hatch.

I've thought about this too. Only issue with my '82 18 is the Bimini top folds down forward inside the bow rail. So if I needed access to the locker, if hinged, and Bimini not up, I wouldn't be able to. |
