I just inherited a mess from a fellow who has passed. 1974 Montauk 170 with 90 HP Evinrude that has been sitting uncovered for a few years at least.

I think the hull and trailer are OK and the motor will need a good going through once I shovel out the leaves and twigs and begin a clean up.

I took some nice pics from when I first saw my treasure and they are on photobucket but I am not sure if pics can be posted or how to do it here.

I am going to need lots of help and info as I tackle this project. I am quite capable I don't know anything about Whalers except that I always loved them.

To start, the steering and control cables are completely rusted and frozen and will need to be replaced. I will also need to find a new or get the existing CC seat cushion repaired/reupholstered. All of the electrical switches and gauges in the console will need to be replaced and I will make the new wood panels from either Teak or Mahogany as I am an accomplished cabinetmaker.

There are numerous other things I can see right now that will need attention or replacement but I had to start somewhere. I have to count my beans close being on a fixed retirement income so this may be a long process depending upon how expensive all this stuff might be. I am in no rush but it will be nice to have a few years to enjoy my Whaler while I still can.

Any help and guidance sure will be appreciated and I hope i can be a valued contributor along the way.

Hi Gary. Welcome to the world of Whalers.

Once you have the boat cleaned out, and motor off, spend the time to weigh it. Then remove boat from trailer and weigh the trailer. You now know what your hull weighs. On this site in the reference section, you will find what your hull should weigh. If significantly heavier, you have water in there somewhere, and that must be addressed before you do anything else.

Go luck with your project!

Thanks Tommy. There is zero possibility my hull won't have water in it! The through hull thimbles are gone and I had trees sprouting in the wire chase. Once I figure out the best place to drill a few relief holes I will do it.

I have no Whaler or even a real boat shop anywhere near me but the UPS guy already knows me by first name.

I replaced all the rail Ts today and can tell everyone it is not a job for the casual DIYer. It took me 4 hours and I needed drills, Sawz-all, dremel with deburring stone, large rubber mallet, scothch brite cloth and lots of patience.

New helm and steering cable should be here tomorrow with the new control cables. I have to go shopping tomorrow and make a day of it because the drive is 100 miles one way to the nearest boating supply place.

Having a blast.

Good luck with the project Gary! I know you'll love your Montauk as much as I do mine!
