I'm thinking about adding teak [cockpit] rod [racks] to my [Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 22]. The problem is I have a stern seat installed. Will rod [racks] fit and be usable on an OUTRAGE 22 with a stern seat? If they'll work, where should I get them? I'd prefer a three holder pair. Thank you.

I have a seat in mine and there's plenty of room to pass the rod tips under the seat. But I would NOT get teak rod holders unless they were made of teak PLYWOOD. The tips break off too easily because of the grain only going in one direction. I'm making my replacements out of starboard.

You should have the rod racks because they not only hold fishing rods, but they provide needed support to the gunwales. Without them, the gunwales will bend under enough weight, like a person stepping on them. I have some available, but the are made from mahogany plywood, as were the originals. blackduckgallery.com/woodparts

All you need to do is bring your rods down to the boat and place horizontally under the gunwale about 4 and 8 and 12 inches off the deck to see if they will fit. Three areas since you are contemplating three rod holders per side.

Aside: I made four rod holders out of 3/4-inch teak and will be installing this week. I took off the old rod holders which had a terrible finish and used them for a guide. They were teak plywood and the tips chipped on them also.

To make them out of wood and if you have a guide, they are not to difficult. A hole saw, jig saw (or band saw) and a router are necessary but the work goes quickly.

If you are into low maintenance, starboard is the way to go. I prefer the look of varnished teak so I went a different route.

I think the topic here is rod racks, not rod holders. Is that correct?

Yes, rod racks. I appreciate your help. I should have some photos available soon on the work that's been done to my boat. I'm hoping to be in the water this weekend.
