I took the bimini and the side gunnel attachment point hardware off the Montauk prior to having the hull re-worked. The good news: the hull looks great outside and inside! The bad news: they patched/gel coated over the mounting holes.

I've looked through photos in Cetacea and in one picture see an angled shot of the fastener, but with the angle it could be plus or minus three or four inches relative to the railing in the picture.

My Montauk hull is vintage 1987. The bimini rails fit inside the gunnel. If you have a picture in your photo collection showing a head-on shot of the inside the gunnel bimini attachment hardware, I sure would be thankful.

I'd love to convert this to the outside frame slider type that many of you have discussed in threads. Can this be done with my top? Is it merely a matter of buying and fitting different bimini rails?

Inquiring minds want to know.
Thanks for any light you can shine on this subject.

Hi wstr75. I think what I am learning is that the bimini tops tend to be fairly specific to the hull depending upon if it is a Mills Bimini top. There should be a label in the forward right corner if it is and you can go to the Mills site and get all the measurements you require. If you have an after market top all bets are off unless it was made to the Mills Specs.

My Montauk is a 1974 17 foot hull and much different from your hull. My top is in need of new canvas and is not of the Mills mfg.

Others should be along soon to give you some better ideas but knowing if your top is the original Mills product will be important.

See Pat's (homeaside) photobucket page for good images of a Motnuak Mills set up. There may be something in there that helps you.

Gary and Jeff,
Thank you!

1. I have a Mills bimini
2. My hardware attached directly to the fiberglass inside of the gunnel. I like Pat's arrangement where he attached a teak piece to the inside of the gunnel and screwed the bimini clevis to the top of the teak piece. Doing it Pat's way would drop down my bimini height about 4 to 6 inches.

The bimini shown in Pat's picture appears to be more narrow front to back than mine, but I presume the bimini primary support attachment point would be essentially the same for both covers. It looks like the clevis point is aligned between the middle and front of the console.

Thanks for the help.
